Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end – and it looks like the long drawn out question mark over Petr Cech’s head-guarded cranium is soon to be resolved.
At the start of the 14/15 season we all knew that with Thibaut Courtois returning from his successful loan spell with Atletico Madrid, something had to budge. Unfortunately for Petr, it’s led to him having a weekly spot on the bench to think about his future, starting just 6 league games all season.
With talks of a move to Besiktas gaining both momentum and authenticity, the realisation of Cech’s departure has led to transfer talk for players moving in the other direction – with a few surprise mentions on the way.
Rob Green, on the books at the now relegated QPR, is reported to be the main target to become the new Chelsea number 2 goalkeeper. Valued at an estimated £2 million, Green is highly likely to leave Rangers in the summer, and could be Chelsea’s second summer signing behind the young Brazilian, Nathan.
Could Rob Green challenge Thibaut Courtois for the number 1 shirt? Maybe not. But his impressive performances (rewarded with an England call up in March) at a club with a frankly awful defence have not gone unnoticed, and his experience and dogged spirit would be welcomed at Stamford Bridge in the same fashion that Mark Schwarzer was once welcomed. Most importantly of all is that his signature won’t break the bank in terms of transfer fee or salary given he’d now be considered a veteran at 35.
We will ensure to update this story with any developments on Rob Green’s future.
