Praise poured in last night for Everton’s young centre back John Stones who helped steer The Toffees to a 2-1 win over Man City in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.
And if he produces many more performances like this, it would be hard to argue against him being a future England captain.
High praise indeed.
I’m often a huge advocate of not over-hyping a player which often leads to way too much pressure too soon.
I think in Stones’ case it’s becoming unavoidable.
With Chelsea failing to secure his signature in the summer, transfer rumours are now rife and talks of a huge bid for Stones from The Blues seem to have some substance.
I sincerely hope we see him in a Chelsea shirt sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, here’s some of the best John Stones tweets from the 2-1 win over Man City last night:
Just leaving Goodison Pk after a great cup tie. Can’t think of a better young defender than John Stones. Besic + Barry brilliant also

John Stones keeping possession in tight spaces at 90 minutes when protecting a lead. Most other British CB’s would lump it into the corner.

John Stones chesting the ball down from a goal kick has to go down as the best thing to ever happen.

And for those that didn’t catch his confident defending at the weekend, watch the clip below and enjoy.
Summary: Stones is defending in his own box pulling off turn after turn to get his side out of trouble. Clearly the Everton fans were more than a little nervous, so once his job was done he casually turns to them and tells them to calm down. Brilliant stuff.
John Stones telling the Park End to calm down is my highlight of the day. What a player ? pic.twitter.com/t0M71qdyQb
