Steve McClaren has signalled his intent to escape the shadow of Sven-Goran Erikkson by dropping former England captain David Beckham.
Beckham stepped down from the role of captain after this summer’s World Cup and yesterday McClaren appointed John Terry as his replacement.
Today the former Middlesbrough manager named his 25-man squad to play Greece at Old Trafford on August 16th, and there was no place for the Real Madrid man.
Instead Chelsea’s Shaun Wright-Phillips is included. Wright-Phillips was omitted by Eriksson for the World Cup.
Terry and Wright-Phillips are two of the four Chelsea players to make the squad; also included are Frank Lampard and Wayne Bridge. Joe Cole’s current knee injury prevents his selection.
