Eden Hazard scored for Belgium as they defeated Israel 3-1 to propel them to the Euros in France next year AND to number 1 in the FIFA world rankings.
Wearing the captain’s armband (after Kompany was substituted on the hour mark), Hazard cooly slotted home the third goal to take the game out of Israel’s reach and end their playoff hopes.
Just as important as the goal will be for Hazard’s confidence, so will his performance. He was back to his menacing best with the ball; playing Lukaku through in the first half before coming close to scoring early in the second half.
His goal came in the 84th minute to make it 3-0 after being found with a pinpoint Dries Mertens pass.
Hazard has now scored 6 times in his last 8 internationals.
Let’s hope he brings his fine form for his country back to club level, starting with Aston Villa at home this weekend.
