Chelsea’s increasingly desperate attempts to sign a world-class striker look set to continue after another of Europe’s top teams rejected their approach.
To date Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus have reportedly turned down massive bids for Adriano, Andrey Shevchenko, Samuel Eto’o and David Trezeguet respectively.
Today Atletico Madrid told the Blues that they will not entertain selling Fernando Torres, despite Mateja Kezman’s almost certain move in the opposite direction.
“Torres? There is nothing,” said Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo.
“We are interested in the players of Chelsea, but we are not going to speak of our meetings.
“The one that decides our transfers is Toni, our technical director, but Fernando is a player of Atletico and he will continue to be for many years.
“[Roman] Abramovich already forgets Torres.”
Such is the desperation to find a striker to support Didier Drogba next season that Jose Mourinho is said to be attempting to persuade Hernan Crespo to return to Stamford Bridge after a year-long loan spell with AC Milan, despite the Argentine’s open dislike of London and English culture.
