Football Warm Up Drills

A warm is a key component to any training or match scenario. Not only is injury prevention diminished, players become more agile, flexible and mentally prepared.


There are an infinite number of football warm up drills that can be set up by coaches, so we’ve boiled it down to 5 that we really like.


Watch each and take a combination to create a custom setup that suits your team and your players.




WARM UP Drill 1

Explanation

  • A technical and well-thought out warm up which aims to improve mental preparation, minimise risk of injury and increase agility and power.
  • The activities include an explosive element followed by an immediate recovery period.
  • There are fast footwork exercises both laterally and side shuffles. You’ll notice a focus on acceleration followed by recovery but the footwork should be carried out as fast as possible.
  • There are progressive introductions of turns making the players sharper and the cones continue to adapt new shapes to keep the players thinking about the exercise.

warm up Drill 2

Explanation

  • This drill focuses on speed and agility in the warm up and talks about strength and conditioning.
  • There a run through of some simple drills to get the body warm, yet essential drills for the players’ muscles.
  • There is also an inclusion of stretching, particularly dynamic stretching.

warm up Drill 3

Explanation

  • Another variation of cones work - encouraging the player to be dynamic, agile, fast and to tune their mind onto the task ahead.
  • The coach here audibly encourages the players to keep their heads up and to not look at their feet - a key takeaway from this warm up exercise.
  • The coach also talks about the posture of the players, keeping low to the ground when shuffling backwards while aiming to keep the head high where possible.

warm up Drill 4

Explanation

  • This drill introduces a ball to the warm up. Focusing on close control but still looking at getting the players agile and flexible while doing so.
  • The games is performed within a square of cones and players need to be fully aware of their surroundings.
  • There are a number of progressions and advancements in this warm up and a selection of exercises to choose from. If you don’t feel all are appropriate for your team, feel free to take some out. This drill is flexible and allows you to pick which suits your players best.

warm up Drill 5

Explanation

  • This drill introduces passing, encouraging fast passing and is a good technical warm up.
  • The area is tight and the players need to be sharp. This drill also focuses on getting plenty of touches of the football.
  • But don’t let your players take it easy, this drill should be performed with passes that are drilled into each other.
  • There is additional emphasis on awareness - where players are encouraged to check as much as possible to get a full picture of the situation, which changes often and quickly.
